The work can begin at any point in high school, but to optimize college planning, the sooner the better. Beginning in 9th and 10th grades, students benefit from developing self-awareness, proactively planning a solid high school curriculum and extracurricular plan, early exploration into majors and careers, and learning about different types of colleges. My 9th and 10th Grade College Prep Essentials focuses on these and other college planning foundations designed to start early high schoolers off right with the confidence to make the most of high school with college in mind. Juniors get serious about building a balanced list of best-fit colleges and developing a plan for where, how, and when to apply so that they can use their summer before senior year to work on essays and other key pieces of their applications. And seniors get straight to work, finalizing their college list and completing all tasks and sections of their applications in plenty of time for fall deadlines.

Students and families who work with me receive individualized guidance, resources, and tools focused on taking the mystery out of college admissions. I love dispelling the myths and eliminating the stressors to help make college admissions feel manageable and intentional. Each of my grade-level packages provide just-right coaching and resources designed to prepare students and their parents for the next step. Parents appreciate being able to step back, and students love that I’m in their corner. Be sure to check out what happy students and parents say about working with me.

I’m physically on the West Coast, but with technology (thanks Zoom and Google docs!), I happily work with students located anywhere, with some of my students hailing from as far away as Hawaii and Tokyo. I especially love helping students particularly interested in applying to University of California schools by sharing my UC Counselor Conference insights and expertise and helping many students successfully gain admittance to every UC campus.

If anyone is promising you this, beware! In fact, I discourage students from becoming too attached to any one school. Too often, students fall in love with an imagined version of themselves on a particular campus or sporting a specific ‘brand name’ sweatshirt, but the reality is, no one can predict with certainty what their experience on any given campus will be like. Adding schools to a college list that are a good fit academically, socially, and financially mitigates the uncertainty in college admissions and optimizes outcomes for everyone. I encourage all students to approach their college application experience with authenticity while striving for the best fit, rather than as a competition focused on trying to be the best candidate. ‘Elite’ and ‘prestigious’ do not equate to ‘best.’ I’ll keep saying it until the end of time—the best college is the best fit for YOU.

The summer before your senior year is the ideal time to write your main essays. Common App, UC, and college-specific prompts are available by this time, so seize the opportunity well before the deadlines and before you dive into your busy senior year. Once you start school in the fall, you need time to complete all the other parts of the applications, including finalizing college-specific supplements and following up on teacher recommendations, transcripts, and financial aid documents. We tackle all of this in my Senior Success plan.

English class doesn’t prepare you for personal writing. And the college essays feel very high stakes, with college admissions officers saying that essays can influence up to 30% of the overall evaluation of an applicant. This means many of you are feeling the pressure but haven’t learned how to write the type of essay colleges are asking for. That’s where I come in. My proven process shows you how to write the essays and unlimited personal coaching ensures you amplify what’s most desired by admissions officers—a chance to get to know the person behind the application. The essays and writing sections are the only parts of the application over which you have total control, and working with me ensures you Get It Write. With me as your professional writing coach in your corner, you will make the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity.
