Building a Balanced List

Unlocking Success: The Art and Science of Building a Balanced College List

and the importance of keeping an open mind

I’m going to go out on a limb here and proclaim that most every conversation around college includes some mention of rankings. The crazy thing is, rankings, like those touted by the now-highly controversial and generally debunked US News & World Report, have little to nothing to do with whether a school is right for a given student. A deep-dive into the criteria for these ‘rankings’ reveals that actually very little has to do with the quality of the student experience. (Spoiler Alert: it’s primarily a marketing gimmick.)

Is that a good school?

Honestly, there’s so much more to a rewarding college experience and what makes a ‘good school’ than the status of the logo on your hoodie or the bumper sticker on your car. Let’s go beyond the rankings to discover meaningful measures and steps to figuring out which colleges are the best colleges for you. Discovering colleges that are the right fit sets students up for success in the college admissions process, because, after all, college is a match to be made, not a prize to be won.

The Importance of Keeping an Open Mind

1. Discovering Hidden Gems: An open mind allows you to explore a diverse range of colleges, uncovering hidden gems that align with your academic and personal aspirations.

2. Adapting to Change: College preferences can evolve during the application process. Keeping an open mind enables you to adapt to changes, ensuring that your final choices resonate with your current goals.

3. Maximizing Opportunities: The college landscape is rich with opportunities. An open mind positions you to embrace unexpected possibilities, expanding your horizon beyond preconceived notions.

The Essence of a Balanced College List

A balanced college list is the cornerstone of a successful admissions journey. It involves curating a selection of colleges that encompasses a variety of characteristics, ensuring that each institution aligns with your academic, social, and personal criteria. Here's why it matters:

1. Risk Mitigation: A balanced list mitigates the risk of limiting your options. Including a mix of low, medium, and high admission probability schools provides a safety net and enhances your chances of being admitted.

2. Catering to Diverse Preferences: Students are unique, and their preferences vary. A balanced list ensures that you consider factors beyond academic reputation, such as campus culture, extracurricular opportunities, and geographical location.

3. Optimizing Fit: Each college on your list should contribute to a well-rounded and fulfilling college experience. A balanced list optimizes fit, aligning with your academic and personal goals.

So How Do You Build a Balanced College List?

1. Self-Reflection: Identify your academic strengths, preferences, personality, and long-term goals. Consider all the factors important to you, like what size campus is best, location - how close or far from home, and extracurricular offerings and opportunities.

2. Research Extensively: Explore a variety of colleges. Look beyond the well-known names and delve into institutions that align with your unique aspirations.

3. Consult with Advisors: Seek guidance from college advisors, teachers, and mentors. Their insights can offer valuable perspectives as you refine your list.

4. Consider Financial Factors: Factor in the financial aspect of college. Take the time to get a handle on your college tuition budget and use tools like a college’s Net Price Calculator and TuitionFit to determine which schools are financial fits for you and your family.
